Hail: the management software for people who repair hail damage
Brand, serverless management software and an algorithm that produces quotes in seconds. A startup born with Matteo Berlose, now at work in Europe and America.

In short
Hail is management software for PDR, the repair of hail dents without repainting, now in use in Europe and America. It started as a startup from the collaboration between Opificio Lamantini Anonimi and Matteo Berlose. Opificio Lamantini Anonimi created its brand, product, serverless infrastructure and the algorithm that calculates damage quotes in a few seconds instead of hours.

After a hailstorm, a PDR technician faces hundreds of cars. Each one has to be assessed, quoted, repaired and invoiced. Matteo Berlose could repair any dent. Together, we put everything else in order.
The starting point
What was PDR work like before Hail?
PDR is a trade of skilled hands: hand-crafted and highly specialised. And it works in waves: after a hailstorm, hundreds of vehicles arrive at once, with assessments, quotes, teams to coordinate and invoices. What was missing was a tool designed around the real workflow of a PDR technician, from assessment to payment.
Hail is not a project delivered and closed. It is a product we have been growing since 2022.

How do you name a product that has to work all over the world?
Nineteen proposals. In the end the simplest one won: HAIL.
The proposals ranged from HAILWORK to REPHAIL, HAILY, HAILER. The most direct name won: hail itself, said in the language of an international market. Then a tone of voice in English, built on rhyme, that can smile even at a dent.
The identity system rests on eight elements. The mark works on three concepts taken from the physical phenomenon: propagation, deformation, iconicity. Hail that strikes and leaves its mark.

What does a PDR technician do from the moment they see a hail-damaged car?
The trade comes before the code. We followed the hands-on work from start to finish, and only then turned it into a workflow.
We mapped the hands-on work step by step, together with the people who do it every day. The result was a single workflow, from the damage on the bodywork to the payment.

How do you turn a hailstorm into a quote in a few seconds?
It used to take hours. Now a few seconds are enough. And for the same damage, the price is the same, whoever prepares the quote.
We wrote an algorithm that fully automates the cost calculation from the damage recorded on the vehicle. In PDR, where hundreds of cars arrive at once after a hailstorm, speed is the difference between taking the job and losing it.
It is also about consistency: same damage, same price.

How do you sell the same software to a lone technician and to a large group?
By speaking to each in their own language. Same product, three ways of telling it.
We helped Hail position itself for three targets, from the technician who works alone to the large group. The website, designed between December 2022 and February 2023, presents the product in several languages.
They work alone, often on the road.
Teams to coordinate.
Large groups that use Hail to manage their daily work.

Why does software for hail need to be serverless?
Hail gives no warning. The infrastructure has to be ready when it comes, and cost nothing when it doesn’t.
Like the beach season for Beacharound, hail is seasonal and unpredictable: peaks arrive suddenly, wherever it has hailed. That is why Hail runs on a fully serverless infrastructure. It scales on its own at the peaks and costs little in the quiet periods.
And it is multilingual, to work in Europe and America.
What does it mean to look after a product for years?
It means never quite handing it over. Hail grows with the people who use it, and we grow with it.
From 2022 to today: the website, the 2023 social media kit, the app’s evolutions, new mock-ups in 2025. Stickers, badges and illustrated characters take the tone of voice off the screen too.
