Euganea Film Festival: a dragonfly that moves, a new artist every year
The logo of the Euganean Hills film festival and, since 2018, the art direction that hands the festival’s image to a different artist every year.

In short
Euganea Film Festival is the film festival of the Colli Euganei (the Euganean Hills, near Padua, Italy), founded in 2002 and reaching its 25th edition in 2026. Since 2018 Opificio Lamantini Anonimi has handled its brand, website and art direction: a striped dragonfly designed to move and, every year, a different illustrator, from Elisa Vendramin to Mara Cerri, for the festival’s image.

The festival was born in 2002, when the only cinema in the Euganean Hills closed. We arrived in 2018. We kept its dragonfly and taught it to move. Since then, every summer, a different artist builds a new world around it.
The starting point
Where was Euganea Film Festival starting from?
From a festival born in response to the closure of the only cinema in the Euganean Hills. It is run by Euganea Movie Movement, in Monselice, the same town as Opificio. And it already had a symbol: a dragonfly.

On the left, the dragonfly from the original logo. On the right, the same dragonfly, redrawn in stripes.
How do you design the logo for a film festival?
You start from what was already there. The original dragonfly, redrawn in stripes: slide a grid across it and it beats its wings.
At the February 2021 presentation we put three routes on the table: work on the typeface, a single-line mark, a moving image. The third one won.
The dragonfly is redrawn with horizontal stripes, like the scan lines of an image. It is not a whim: the logo is designed for scanimation, the optical technique in which a grid of lines sliding over a drawing makes it move. The nature of the hills and the language of cinema, in the same mark.

How does an identity grow when the association grows?
With the same language and different subjects. An eye for the solar cinema, a wheel for the bike, always made of stripes.
The dragonfly technique becomes a system for Euganea Movie Movement’s projects. Euganea Movie Movement, Solar Cinema, BIKE2021: each has its own subject, all are made of stripes and all can move.
Over the years the family has grown. The latest arrival is the Euganea Film Residency.

How do you renew a festival without losing what makes it recognisable?
Every year we choose an artist and give them room. Our job is to find them, and then hold everything else together.
Every edition starts from a concept. Then comes the choice of artist, Italian or international, the art direction, the poster and all its adaptations: banners, covers, social media, objects. The logo stays. The image changes.
The logo holds the editions together. The artists make each one unrepeatable.

The 2024 concept is Multiversi (Multiverses): a plant that grows pods, and inside each pod a different world. Like cinema, which shows us other ways of looking.

What does a festival need beyond its image?
A place to find everything: programme, films, venues, awards. And the archive of every edition.
The euganeafilmfestival.it website brings together the programme, films, events, venues, jury and awards. Every year it changes its skin with the edition’s image, and it keeps the archive of past editions.
And, behind the scenes, a management system built over time.
